Materials Required

  • Flashing
  • Ladder
  • Nails
  • Coating Layer
  • Metal Roof Panels/Shingles
  • Metal Snips
  • Wooden Stapler
  • Counter Flashing

Basic Instructions on Roofing Installation

  • First, determine the type of roofing you want and then procure the metal roofing materials accordingly. Interlocking metal roofing systems, panels, metal shingles, etc., containing all the essentials are available at roofing supply companies, such as Metal Roofing Systems.
  • Place the ladder firmly on the ground and attach it to the roof. Wear non-slip shoes while climbing the ladder.
  • Remove existing roofing materials. The shingles can be easily loosened with chisel and hammer. Take them out and then replace with new ones or metal shingle systems.
  • The entire roof base is then covered with a roofing paper, tacked in place with a wooden stapler.
  • The perimeter of the roof is edged with the metal, which comes with the standard kit. The edging is nailed across the metal with a hammer.
  • Now each panel is laid across the frame of the roof. The panels are overlapped with the next (2-3 inches) with a hammer. Spacing is approximately 1 foot.
  • Steel/tin/aluminum snips are cut out according to the size of the panels and roofing dimensions. They are interlocked with the base of the roof.
  • Trim kits and flashing materials are then installed over the panels for the shiny effect. This step completes the metal roofing installation process, usually followed by do-it-yourselfers who want to install a metal roof in the most cost effective way. Installing a metal roof yourself has never been easier.

Metal Roofing vs. Shingles — Deciding What Is Cost Effective

Metal Roofing vs. Shingles Metal Roofs – Permanent Metal Roofing Solutions

Consider metal roof vs. shingles cost when determining your roof repairs or replacement. Metal Roofing Systems serves customers in Milwaukee, Madison and southern Wisconsin. If you are need of roofing, contact us for consultation on installing a metal roofing system on your home, house of worship, church or commercial building (flat commercial roofs). We will gladly offer advice and provide you with a bid estimate for your particular situation. We realize that there are many factors to consider when repairing or replacing your current roof and all of the costs associated with materials and labor.

Factors to Consider – Roof Repair or Replacement
There are many factors to consider when comparing a metal roof vs. shingles, cost being one of the main factors. Metal roof systems are permanent replacements (or in many cases, the metal roofs are installed over an existing roof) for traditional asphalt shingle and wood frame roofing. Some of the cost factors to consider include:

• Asphalt shingle roofs are less expensive than metal roofs

• Asphalt roofs need shingles replaced periodically

• Asphalt shingles and wood frame roofs usually require a complete replacement within 20 years due to natural deterioration

• Metal roofing systems are permanent and will last at least 100 years

• The initial cost of metal roofing and labor is always higher than with a shingle roof, but that is quickly offset when you consider that you don’t have to replace parts of the roof every few years, or the entire roof every couple of decades

• Usually, metal roofs are installed over existing roofs (the state of the current roof and local ordinances are the two main factors in whether a metal roof can be installed over your traditional asphalt roof)

• Metal roofs can withstand high winds (hurricane level winds) and easily withstand up to 1” hail, and the roofs are designed to be leak-proof – all of this means you do not have the occasional repair costs associated with shingle roofs

Be Aware of Common Problems in your Home

Some very important problems are easy to overlook at your home.  Pay attention to the below common issues:

  • Rusted Exhaust Flues. Over a period of years, condensation can cause steel exhaust ducts on furnaces and water heaters to rust. Holes in these ducts can allow dangerous gasses to enter your home rather than be vented outside.
  • Damp Insulation. The insulation on top of your ceilings is there to save you energy dollars. For maximum effectiveness, this insulation needs to be dry and fluffy. Improper attic ventilation can cause the insulation to become damp and heavy. A 10% reduction in the moisture level of your insulation can increase its R Value by 25%.
  • Plumbing Leaks. Water getting to places where it shouldn’t be in your home will likely lead to mold. Plumbing leaks can be visible beneath sinks and other places, or they can be hidden in your walls or crawlspace.
  • Attic Mold. High attic moisture levels can result from ventilation issues and lead to mold. However, slow roof leaks, often at the bottoms of valleys or against dormers and other roof penetrations, will also create mold and even expensive rot.
  • Holes. Holes in crawlspace vents, around basement windows, or in roof overhangs can allow vermin such as mice or even larger critters to enter your home. If they die inside your home, the odor can linger for weeks and, shy of tearing apart walls, the source will be very difficult to remove. Dead animals can also lead to insect infestation and mold

Hopefully, these things are not problems at your home but they all represent problems that, if left unchecked, grow to become more damaging and more expensive to repair. Please view our gallery to see beautiful roofing solutions for your home.
